The Moroccan Weathergirls

Moroccan culture being what it is (extremely traditional and difficult to change), native and visiting women alike struggle for acceptance. I spoke to one girl in particular, a womens studies major, after returning tot he ship who found the cultural situation particularly difficult. Going out was hard enough, and always required a male escort or three. Fed up and tired, however, she and two other girls made the trek through Casablanca back to the ship unassisted and through the rain, and along the way passed one of the few bars open during Ramadan. 'It's Raining Men' blared conspicuously, and she said the girls, soaked, began dancing and singing on the street. When the song was over, the doors burst open with the wild applause and cheers of the Moroccan women who had been watching them through the windows and invited the girls to join the fun inside. Even across oceans and cultures that carry us so wildly away from home, it is always a welcome reminder that we are all pink on the inside and all share an affinity for 70s pop music.
